Recent versions of Word and large documents Are Word 2007/2010 any better at handling large documents?

I cannot find an Outline Tab on the Ribbon nor a Masterdocs command anywhere. I am sure it has been dropped. It was in W2007 though.

Terry:

They have hidden it pretty well. First switch to outline view. The Outlining tab will appear. I don't use the outline view nearly as much as I did with W2003 & 2007, so I didn't find it on my own.

Thanks Pam. I had also not "discovered" this, hence my stating the function had been discontinued. (I will put in an edit to my earlier post to ensure readers of this thread are not mislead.

To answer Terry's question a few posts back, the document is currently 3.9MB. It is 400 pages when all formatting and index entries are hidden, but expands to 431 pages when all formatting and index entries are shown. (There are a LOT of index entries, as I'm a great believer in having a comprehensive index.) The document also contains quite a lot of cross-references, and a few images (but not an excessive number).

As the document has grown and been rearranged numerous times over the course of its life, perhaps the best thing to do initially would be to create a new document from the template and copy the contents across from the old doc to the new one.

I will have to take the plunge eventually and move to a newer version of Word, but am not looking forward to learning the new interface. However, this forum is a great resource for getting questions answered, so that should ease the transition when it comes.

Thanks for all the input so far.
