Lounge Rules
All of us who moderate and manage the Windows Secrets Lounge take pride in the fact that its content is safe for work. Please don't post text, images, or hyperlinks to material that is crude or lewd. "Not safe for work" (NSFW) means material that a member's no-nonsense boss would be likely to frown on viewing in a formal office environment. Clean humorous posts, time-wasters such as puzzles, and other harmless diversions can be safe for work, but please maintain decorum in all replies, and don't post vulgar material that is NSFW.
You must be 13 or older to register as a Lounge member. If you are a child under 13, please use other Web sites that are appropriate for your age group. If we later determine that a member is or was under 13, we reserve the right to delete all information about the member and terminate the member's access.
Violation of any of the Lounge Rules may result in action by an administrator or moderator, including editing, moving, or removing any thread started by a member or content posted by a member; warning the member, either privately or publicly; restricting the member's privileges; or deleting the member's account. Any person's ability to post, edit, or delete any material may be ended by the Lounge at any time, manually or using automated processes, with or without explanation or notice to the member.
By registering with or using the Windows Secrets Lounge (the "Lounge"), each person ("you") agrees that you have read and will abide by the rules detailed below, so please read them carefully. To receive a notification when a rule is modified, please follow the instructions in Changes to the Lounge Rules.
The Lounge is brought to you as a service of WindowsSecrets.com LLC ("Windows Secrets" or "we" or "us").
The Lounge is a great place to post questions and answers, and to have productive discussions. We find that inappropriate posts are rarely submitted, because Loungers are well known to be very helpful to each other.
The following are rules to follow when posting a message or reply, and shall also serve as the terms and conditions governing the use of the Lounge (click any link to scroll down, press Ctrl+Home to scroll to top):
1. Keep your password confidential
On registration, you and every other person who registers ("member") will be provided with a member ID and password for your membership access. You may change your password at any time by editing your profile. You agree not to reveal your password to any other person, and you shall be responsible for the confidentiality of your password and for all activities that occur from its use.
2. Observe our privacy policy
See our Privacy Policy.
3. Keep threads on a single topic
When starting a new thread, choose the appropriate forum and give your post an informative title. If you are reporting a computer problem, be sure to supply relevant details of your problem and your setup to help in identifying a possible solution. For example, specify the version number of Windows or the Office application you're posting about. When replying to a message, keep to the topic. If your message isn't on topic, then it should be a new thread, not a reply. If your post is in response to an existing thread, do not start a new one. Please do not waste our space and time with trivial ramblings; show consideration for busy people (which means all of us!). Avoid meaningless titles such as "I need help" and the notorious "Me, too" response.
4. Post answers you find to your questions
If you find the answer after posting a question in the Lounge, please add a reply so that the answer can be of use to others in the future. It is helpful if you explain how you resolved your issue, with credit given to other sources as appropriate.
5. Don't use content without permission
All our graphics, text, and other content is protected by copyright, trademark, and other law. You may not use our graphics, text, or other content without our prior written permission.
6. Avoid edits that make threads unreadable
We know you all like to keep things tidy, but remember, your message may be a key part of a thread that suddenly becomes nonsense if you remove your contribution.
7. Post a single "thank you" for help received
If several people have contributed help in solving your problem, there's no need to post individual thank-you replies to each of them. Make one reply to the topic, thanking them all. If you start your reply with "Thanks to all," people can skip it if they're in a hurry.
8. Do not transmit dangerous material
Do not post information that is deliberately false or misleading or anything that contains software viruses designed to interrupt the function of any other computer or its programs or files. Do not attempt in any way to disrupt the Lounge service or its server.
9. Avoid personal insults or flames
This is very rare here, but there have been some misunderstandings. To avoid problems, be sure to read over your post before sending it. If you're joking, make it clear so that other members do not take it the wrong way. In other words, just try to be courteous.
10. Do not make private-message requests
Please keep your questions and answers on the public forums. We discourage sending or asking for replies via e-mail or private message. Private requests defeat the purpose of the Lounge, which is designed to share information as widely as possible. If you're worried you'll miss any replies, click the thread's link to receive e-mail notification. You can also set your notification defaults globally in the Your Notifications section of your Profile.
11. Document any critiques of specific companies
If your post mentions a problem with a specific company's products or services, be sure to include solid and reproducible documentation of your remarks, such as a detailed description, screen shot, or photo of the problem. You, not the Lounge, will be responsible for defending your statements.
12. No self-linking or advertising in posts
Linking to your own sites, or to products or services for sale, within the body of a post is considered spam. You may, however, include links in your signature and 'About me' page as long as they are reasonable. If in doubt, please contact an Administrator. You may recommend a site that may be of help (your own included), but only if it answers a question that has been asked by another member within the topic in which you are posting. We do not allow classified ads of any sort. This is an information exchange forum, not a product exchange. If you wish to purchase or sell something, please visit sites that are specifically set up for those transactions.
13. No posting of pirated and/or illegal material
Windows Secrets is committed to complying with copyright and other laws, and expects all members to comply as well. Using the Lounge to transmit (whether by e-mail, uploading, posting, or otherwise) copyrighted works without the express permission of the owner, or to engage in any activity that infringes any copyright or any other right of a third party, violates these rules. However, short excerpts, especially with a link to the source, that a reasonable person would consider "fair use" under the U.S. Copyright Act are permitted and encouraged. You represent and warrant (a) that you own, or are otherwise lawfully authorized to use, any files, data, text, or other information that you transmit to or through the Lounge, and (b) that any use of the files, data, text, or other information supplied by you does not violate these rules and will not cause injury to any person or entity.
14. Avoid cross-posting into two or more forums
Cross-posting is the posting of the same or nearly the same message on more than one forum (for example, posting the same message in both the Database forum and the Spreadsheets forum). To avoid this, choose the one forum that is the most appropriate and post your message there. Most members watch for new threads in several forums.
15. Please don't post any chain letters
However worthy the cause, chain letters and petitions are not allowed.
16. Do not flood forums with similar posts
"Flooding" the forums means posting similar comments or questions in different threads in a short period of time. This is a form of cross-posting, which should be avoided by posting any comment or question in the single most-appropriate forum for it.
17. Do not make demands of members or moderators
Every moderator, VIP, and member who answers questions in the Lounge donates his or her time for free to help people. Demanding help within a certain time frame or that code be written for you is not acceptable. Lounge members may try to help you, but they are not responsible for any deadlines of yours that are not met, projects that are not finished, code that may not be suitable for your situation, or any other problem that may occur, whether or not your question was answered.
18. Objectionable content is specifically prohibited
We do not allow posts, display names, or attachments that are, or appear to a reasonable person to be, obscene, vulgar, sexually-oriented, hateful, or threatening; prejudiced against a political, religious, or racial group; or in violation of law. Avoid outraged commentaries on sensational topics.
19. Read the FAQ and the Help before posting
The FAQ links on the Lounge Lobby page and the
20. Keep your graphics small and user-friendly
Limit the number of graphics you post and keep them small, as large graphics slow down loading a thread. Nothing offensive, please, and no overly "busy" animations. You don't want to frighten people away.
21. These terms and conditions may be modified
We reserve the right to revise these Lounge Rules from time to time in our discretion. If we modify these rules, we will post the revised rules on this page, and the revised version will take effect [The following wording will be deleted Aug. 19, 2010:]
22. Don't post confidential information
The Lounge is public by nature, and any information posted on it shall be deemed non-confidential. If you don't want other people to use or copy your great ideas, don't post them on the Lounge.
23. Submit only appropriate text, graphics, and content
You acknowledge that any content submitted and/or discussed on the Lounge may be the subject of patents, copyrights, trademarks, and other intellectual property rights of Windows Secrets, its subsidiaries, affiliates, partners, or other members or third parties. If you consider using any ideas, proposals, suggestions, solutions, or other content submitted to the Lounge, you are responsible to undertake appropriate intellectual property clearance before using the content.
By posting or responding to a message on the Lounge, you agree that your messages and other content will be proper, constructive, and relevant and will not contain any item that may be unlawful or otherwise unfit for publication, including but not limited to items that (1) may be defamatory, (2) are intended to cause harm to any person or otherwise defame or harass any person or organization, (3) violate any legal rights of any person (including any right to privacy or publicity), (4) are pornographic, obscene, profane, vulgar, indecent, or threatening, (5) are culturally, ethnically, or otherwise objectionable, or (6) suggest or encourage any illegal activity.
[The following wording will take effect Aug. 19, 2010:] Please spell out abbreviations on their first use in a thread, in consideration of members who may not know every acronym. Avoid cell-phone jargon like CUL8R ("see you later"). Abbreviations and other shorthand terms that, when expanded, include words that are obscene, vulgar, or offensive are not permitted.
24. You license us to publish submitted material
For all content that you post or upload to the Lounge, you continue to own (and you retain) any and all rights, including any copyright and trademark rights, that you may have in that content, and you give Windows Secrets the right to publish it. For the avoidance of doubt, you grant to Windows Secrets, its subsidiaries, affiliates, and partners a worldwide, irrevocable, perpetual, royalty-free, non-exclusive, sublicensable, and transferable license to use, reproduce, prepare derivative works of, distribute, publicly perform, publicly display, transmit, and publish all text, graphics, and other content that you post or upload to the Lounge.
25. Request removal of copyright violations via DMCA
If you believe that your work has been copied on the Lounge, or on any of our other systems or networks, in a way that constitutes infringement under the Copyright Act of the United States or similar laws of other countries, please provide the following information to the Lounge for receipt of notification of claimed infringement. Ensure that your notification complies with the requirements of the U.S. Digital Millennium Copyright Act; please see 17 U.S.C. § 512 C (3):
• An electronic or physical signature of the person authorized to act on behalf of the owner of the copyright interest;
• A description of the copyrighted work that you claim has been infringed;
• A description of where the material that you claim is infringing is located on the site;
• Your address, telephone number, and e-mail address;
• A statement by you that you have a good faith belief that the disputed use is not authorized by the copyright owner, its agent, or the law;
• A statement by you, made under penalty of perjury, that the above information in your notification is accurate and that you are the copyright owner or authorized to act on the copyright owner's behalf.

Similarly, the Lounge may be accessed from third-party links over which Windows Secrets has no control. If you live in a country or state that does not allow any of the foregoing exclusions or limitations of liability or any of the disclaimers of warranties, such exclusions or limitations will not apply to you, but only to the extent such exclusions or limitations are not allowed. In such case, such exclusions or limitations shall be limited to the greatest extent permitted by applicable law.
29. We may shut down particular forums
Windows Secrets has the sole right to shut down any forum or any part of the Lounge for any reason at any time without notice or consent. Windows Secrets will have no responsibility or liability for any failure to store, or any action to delete, any content on the Lounge.
30. The Lounge rules are severable
If any provision of these Lounge Rules is held to be invalid or unenforceable, then the invalid or unenforceable provision will be replaced by a valid, enforceable provision that most closely matches the intent of the original provision, and the remaining provisions shall be enforced.
31. No waiver is constituted
No failure on the part of Windows Secrets to enforce any part of these Lounge Rules shall constitute a waiver of any of Windows Secrets' rights under these Lounge Rules, whether for past or future actions on the part of any person. Neither the receipt of any funds by Windows Secrets nor the reliance of any person on Windows Secrets' actions shall be deemed to constitute a waiver of any part of these Lounge Rules. Only a specific, written waiver signed by an authorized representative of Windows Secrets shall have any legal effect whatsoever.
32. Disputes shall be resolved by arbitration
The Lounge and these rules are governed by the law of the State of Washington and the federal law of the United States of America, without any reference to conflicts of laws principles. The arbitral award will be final and binding, and may be entered and enforced in any court of competent jurisdiction.
Date: Revised and effective 2009-12-15.
